The Living Shadow
By Rylan Ahmadi
Sixteen-year-old Julian Quinn James leads a difficult life scavenging for resources amidst the remnants of war-torn Manhattan in the year 2043. Although Julian can recall the better days of his childhood before the beginning of World War III, he has become used to his new life, when suddenly, disaster strikes—his friends and family disappear. The only clue to their absence: a mysterious apparition which vanishes when exposed to light. As Julian struggles to survive on his own, he must befriend a secretive loner as his sole ally, repair a communication device left behind by a friend, avoid a gang of smugglers, escape a devastating ground zero, and learn the secret of the living shadow.
Meet the Author
Rylan Ahmadi
I’ve lived on two continents, the most remote island chain in the world, and have visited countries across four continents (including Israel, Canada, South Africa, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, the Turks and Caicos, and Swazi—whoops—eSwatini), ridden camels in the Middle East, snorkeled with manta rays and dolphins in the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, and been on safari in the African veldt.
With my books, I strive to put some of what I always wanted to see in literature out into the world, and inspire other young authors to pursue their dreams. I want to write stories which are full of hope for the years to come, stories which reflect the mistakes we, as humankind, have made, but don’t dwell on life’s pitfalls.
My books exist to be read, and I am so glad that I have had the chance to share them with you. I hope you enjoy, and I’m excited to hear your thoughts!
What Readers Are Saying
This great coming of age story is set in a dystopian future that reflects aspects of our current world and tackles issues that society struggles with today. It offers a hopeful perspective in a dangerous environment, and a view into what we could achieve if we put our minds to it. I couldn’t put it down!
Stick to the shadows! Journey through a familiar world, full of mystery and many twists and turns.
What an enjoyable read! An exciting plot with a meaningful message. I found the characters relatable, kids growing up and trying to live life under difficult circumstances, seeking the closeness of family and community. Despite the bleak environment, the characters show hope, unity, and caring, very heartwarming!
